LAGOS – A middle-aged woman, Florence Adeoye, on Thursday pleaded with an Ojo Customary Court in Lagos to dissolve her 20-year-old marriage, over threats to her life.
Florence told the court that her husband, Nelson Adeoye, whom she had two girls for, often threatened her life by employing the services of his girl friends.
She told the court that the husband, a level 15 officer in a public school in Lagos State, was fond of constantly beating her up after he would have been drunk to stupor.
“My husband has turned into something else since 2003.
“He keeps girl friends and beats me up using his girl friends. The last one happened on Oct. 12 which I reported to the Ojo Police Station.
“Whenever my husband gets drunk, he strips himself naked before my daughters; he had sometime in the past abandoned us and instructed the landlady to eject us.”
She told the court that Nelson had never shown any concern over his daughters’ education.
Florence pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage so that she would not lose her life, following the alleged maltreatment by Nelson.
The accused, however, debunked his wife’s claims, saying he neither touched nor recruited any lady to beat up Florence.
“My wife is very violent, I never abandoned her. But she is the one who has gradually been removing her personal belongings from our matrimonial home to a house she built without my knowledge.
“I wanted our daughters to attend schools close to us because of their health condition,’’ he said.
The President of the court, Mr Hakeem Oyekan, advised the couple to desist from bringing in a third party into their marriage.
Oyekan also cautioned the parties to desist from engaging in violent acts against each other.
He ordered Nelson to allow his wife to remain in her matrimonial home, pending the determination of the case.
Oyekan adjourned the case till Nov. 25 for further hearing. (NAN)
