ABUJA – The Ministry of Works says it has concluded arrangement to set up a joint team to enforce the right of way along federal roads in Anambra State.
The Minister of Works, Mr Mike Onolememen, made this known when he received the Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra State, who visited him on Tuesday in Abuja.
Onolememen decried the increasing level of illegal activities on federal roads, resulting in right of way abuses on road infrastructure and a drain on public funds.
He said that the Federal Government would no longer tolerate the erection of illegal buildings, destruction of road and other forms of right of way abuses.
To this end, he said the Ministry of Works would constitute a joint team comprising federal ans state offiicials as well as security operatives to enforce the right of way on roads within that part of the country.
He, therefore, solicited the cooperation of the Anambra State Government to check the menace of right of way abuses which posed a threat to peace in the state.
“A sizable part of the Onitsha-Owerri Road which we have just reconstructed, has virtually been turned into a waste dump.
“Not only is it environmentally unsightly and unfriendly, it also destroys the road pavements.
“I want to appeal to you to do all within your power to ensure that proper waste dump sites in Anambra are completely fenced off the road.
“As long as they continue to have direct access from the road, they will continue to mess up the road infrastructures which are put in place with huge sums of tax payers money. Onolememen commended Obiano for the several initiatives he had put in place to improve the security situation in the state within the short period in office.
Earlier, Obiano said his visit was to draw the attention of the minister to the deplorable state of federal roads in the state.
“I am here to draw your attention to a specific challenge we are having with federal roads that we would like you to very urgently look into.
“I have some slides I would present to you during our closed-door session to further explain the state of disrepair of these roads,” Obiano said. (NAN)
