ABUJA – Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, on Sunday charged the Super Eagles to ensure victory in their opening match of the 2014 FIFA World Cup against Iran.
A statement issued by the Speaker’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Imam Imam, said Tambuwal urged the players to draw inspiration from Nigeria’s representatives at the 1994 World Cup.
“The 1994 team made a huge statement of intent when they defeated Bulgaria 3-0 in their opening encounter, before putting up commendable performances in their subsequent matches,” he said.
The Speaker said the present Super Eagles team could suceed because the players have the spirit, drive and determination to surpass the achievement of 1994.
“So, we can show the world how ready we are by spanking the Iranians,’’ Tambuwal was quoted as sayng.
The statement said Tambuwal assured the team of the total support of 170 million Nigerians and expressed confidence that the African champions would not let Africa down.
The Super Eagles will start their campaign at the competition in Brazil on Monday against Iran from 8 p.m. Nigerian time.
They will square up against debutants Bosnia-Herzegovina in their second Group F match on June 21, before facing Argentina in their last Group F match on June 25.
The 20th edition of the World Cup finals, holding in Brazil, started on June 12 and will end on July 13.(NAN)
