OSOGBO – A medical expert, Dr Taiwo Oso on Tuesday said self-discipline was a way to guide against stroke and other terminal diseases.
Oso told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Osogbo that life style remained the greatest factor that put someone at the risk of stroke.
He listed smoking, heavy drinking, coupled with too much intake of fats and salt as some other causes of stroke.
He said that the disease although, a terminal ailment could easily be prevented or managed as the case may be through a moderate life style.
The medical practitioner advised people to take more of fruits and vegetables, adding that exercising the body regularly also reduced the chances of suffering stroke.
“It is obvious that nothing worthwhile is possible without discipline, this also applies to human health, and the most reliable secret of healthy living is self-discipline.
“As World Stroke Day is being celebrated worldwide today, as a way of identifying with individuals who have gone down with the disease, I implore everybody to be moderate in their life style.
“Habits like smoking, heavy drinking and too much of salt and fatty food intakes are catalyst to stroke, it triggers and aggravates the ailment.
“It is easier and cheaper to prevent the disease than to manage it, so, moderation and vigilance is required,’’ he opined.
Oso urged government to help patients who had suffered stroke by subsidising their drugs, arguing that many could not survive the ailment due to their inability to procure necessary drugs. (NAN)
