DAMATURU – The Yobe State Government on Thursday said it had paid N70 million as counterpart fund for the African Development Bank (ADB) rural water intervention scheme.
Alhaji Muhammad Bukar, the General Manager of the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASSA) in the state, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu.
Bukar said 150 motorised boreholes were constructed and 89 others rehabilitated in the 17 Local Government Areas in the state.
He also said that the state government in partnership with EU/Unicef had constructed water and sanitation facilities in 286 communities in Bade and Nguru local government areas.
He said four solar-powered boreholes were constructed and three others rehabilitated.

The general manager said sanitation facilities were also provided to some rural communities under the Yobe/ EU/Unicef and Japanese partnership.
“Our campaign on sanitary education has been taken to schools; there has been increased awareness against open defecation as well as the culture of washing hands among pupils and students,” he said.
He appealed to the beneficiaries to guard the facilities for maximum utilisation and benefits.
“We hope the provision of safe water and sanitation facilities will curb water borne related diseases and improve the health of the rural communities. (NAN)
