Yenagoa – The Police Command in Bayelsa has warned the public against the use of fireworks, saying the command would arrest and prosecute any offender.
Mr Uche Anozie, the state Commissioner of Police, who gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Yenagoa, urged sellers of low explosives, fireworks, to desist from it.
“I urge the public to stay away from the usage because we will not allow offenders to go unpunished; we will arrest and prosecute persons involved in the business,” the commissioner said.
On security during and after the festival, Anozie said that the command would deploy officers in the state to volatile areas including recreational centres.
“The highway patrol teams will be deployed and all personnel will also be deployed on special operations toward achieving peaceful Christmas and New Year celebrations.
“The officers will be at strategic positions; you know this is a special period and we have to work hard to ensure tight security.
“We are going to have security network all over the state to prevent breakdown of law and order before, during and after the yuletide,’’ the police boss said.
Anozie advised members of the public go about their lawful businesses without fear of molestation.
