GUSAU – The Zamfara Zakat and Endowment Board said on Wednesday it would build 300 houses in 2015 to advance the internally generated revenue of the state.
The Executive Secretary of the board, Malam Bashir Surajo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gusau that the houses would be given out on rent to interested persons when completed.
He reiterated that it was the duty of the board to assist orphans and the less-privileged hence the need to generate additional income.
He added that thousands of people were supported with food, money and scholarship in 2014 and there was the need to do more.
“The primary, junior secondary as well as senior secondary education of many children is being sponsored by the board.
“Since the job the board renders is capital intensive, we have to increase the sources of our income to enable us to carry out our responsibilities properly.
“We have, therefore, decided to focus on building houses which will increase our funding for the betterment of lives of orphans and less-privileged in the state,” he said.
According to him, the major source of funds for the board is through deductions of two per cent from any contract awarded by the state and local governments.
The executive secretary commended the committees set up to collect Zakat fund and endowment across the 14 local government areas of the state.
He urged them to be God-fearing in the discharge of their duties. (NAN)
