GUSAU – Farmers in Zamfara on Friday urged the Federal Government to establish a Marketing Board in the state to assist farmers to sell their produce.
The Chairman of the Zamfara Farmers’ Association, Alhaji Hassan Muhammad, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gusau.
He said the establishment of the board would encourage farmers to produce more food crops as the board would assist in adding value to farm produce.
Muhammad added that the board would also fix prices of agricultural products to encourage farmers to boost productions.
“If we can get a board in the state, it will assist us a lot because it will guarantee stability of prices of farm products, as well as make it easy for our small and medium scale farmers to sell their products,’’ he said.
According to him, government should increase its support for farmers.
“The support needed by farmers from government is on farm inputs like fertilisers and seeds, as well as a marketing board.
“Government should also make sure that the support given to farmers extends to small and medium scale farmers in rural areas in order to provide employment and create wealth.’’
The chairman urged farmers to unite in order to have one voice, adding that unity among farmers would assist them in securing assistance from all tiers of government. (NAN)
