GUSAU – The Zamfara Government says it has disbursed N932 million as gratuities to 970 retirees in the last eight months.
The Permanent Secretary of the state Pension Commission, Alhaji Bala Bukkuyum, announced this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Gusau.
Bukkuyum said that the state government, through the commission, had from March to October, settled almost 50 per cent of the gratuity debt inherited from previous governments.
He noted that when the current administration came in to power in 2011, it met a lot of problems on retirees’ gratuities and pensions.
He said government evolved new system of paying pensioners on retirement.
” We have already paid all the 2013 gratuity approvals and we will soon start payment of 2014 approvals.
“We hope that before June 2015, we will pay all of them and also clear the remaining debt inherited.
He said as at November, the commission had 1,943 pensioners, saying that it was making efforts to settle all entitlements effectively.
Bukkuyum, therefore, called on retirees to always follow due process and come directly to the commission as soon as they retired. (NAN)
