Ado-Ekiti- The football team of Ikere Local Government Area (LGA) on Tuesday defeated their Ikole LGA counterparts to qualify for the national finals of the 2014 President’s Cup Football Tournament.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in the match played in Ado-Ekiti, the game ended 0-0 at regulation time, before Ikere went on to win 7-6 after penalty kicks.
Both teams however displayed good skills and tactics, but the Ikere LGA team proved stronger both in the defence and upfront than their Ikole counterparts.
The Ikole team missed lot of goal scoring chances to seal victory over Ikere team within 90 minutes, but failed due to lack of concentration.
Reacting to their victory, coach Kehinde Anjorin of the Ikere LGA team appreciated his boys for displaying a level of discipline and determination.
He acknowledged that their opponents played better than his boys, but he said his team was able to curtail them.
On his part, coach Bolarinwa Idris of the Ikole LGA team expressed his disappointment at the failure of his boys to take their chances during regular time play.
“I have good and experienced boys in my team and they played better than the Ikere LGA team, but unfortunately my boys lost concentration towards the end of the second half,’’ he said.
NAN reports that the competition’s organisers plan to select talented players to represent Ekiti in the South-West Zonal Elimination Competition in Akure in January.(NAN)
