Lagos – The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Polytechnics (SSANIP) on Thursday urged the Federal Government to fast-track payment of Consolidated Tertiary Institution Salary Structure (CONTISS 15) arrears to workers in polytechnics.
Mr Sunday Sabo, the National President of the association, made the appeal at the ongoing 4th National Delegates Conference of SSANIP at Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.
Sabo said that a committee set up to address the issue of CONTISS arrears had been working on it since 2013, but it had not been paid.
“In 2013, Federal Government released a circular for CONTISS 15 implementation and the polytechnics were asked to compute the cost implication, which they did, and it was taken to the government for payment.
“The government then said they would verify the information, and in the process, an inter-ministerial verification committee was set up.
“We, as a union, felt government should do the right thing.
“We expected that in the verification exercise, the committee should check the computation done by various institutions as to whether there are ghost workers on the list.
“They should check if there are duplications of names and if the computation was properly done by using the correct salary structure as at when it was done.
“That is what we expect from the government, but as I speak, we are still on the issue,“ he said.
Sabo said that the government and the committee had been keeping mute over the payment of the arrears in spite of the computation exercise.

“CONTISS 15 is a movement of staff from one level to another and adjustment, because a similar thing was done for civil servants, but it was not done for workers in the polytechnic sector, which we requested for,’’ he said.
Sabo said that the agreement was signed in 2009 and the arrears accrued because it was not implemented as and when due. (NAN)
