The Director of Defence Information (DDI), Col. Rabi Abubakar made this known in Abuja on Wednesday at an interactive session with journalists, where he called on the media to desist from publishing stories based on mere speculation without making inquiry form the military.
He also revealed that after the military released the list of 100 most wanted Boko Haram terrorists, he said five of them have been arrested at various locations in collaboration with other security agencies.
He said: “All these things we are doing is to make sure that the populace remain safe from the hands of these Boko Haram terrorists who are now devising a different means of fighting through this issue of IEDs and even some cluster bombs which they conceal in attractive objects and drop in the streets for people to pick.
“We are using this platform to enlighten the citizens to make sure that our citizens do not fall victim to what could be avoided.”
Abubakar stated that while the media has being contributing immensely to the success of the war, he added that the media should try to confirm whatever information at their disposal before publishing any story.
“The more information you give to terrorist activities, the more they strive, the more they become prominent, the more they become dominant.
“So, we are appealing that this is our country, and the security agencies are Nigerians who are working to serve the Nigerian people. Therefore, it is duty bound as enshrined in the constitution for the citizens to contribute to the ongoing campaign against insurgency,” Abubakar stressed.
