LAGOS – Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, Tunji Bello on Thursday tasked pupils and students at all levels to be steadfast and focused in the efforts to combat the effects of climate change.He gave the charge during an event to mark the the sixth anniversary of the establishment of Climate Change Clubs in schools by the state government.
The theme of the event was “Children Across Boundaries Unite to Combat Climate Change”.
Bello noted that over the years, children and the aged were the most vulnerable to the climate change effects.
“Climate change is a global challenge that transcends beyond borders, which explains the reason why it has become the collective responsibility among global players.
“I urge you to remain steadfast and focused to ensure that we not only change our peers in school but also our parents at home and indeed the totality of our people.’’
Bello noted that the state government had continued to partner international organisations such as UNDP and UNESCO, among others, to share best practice and improve the capacity of younger ones.
He charged the students to continue to make environment friendly decisions and be committed to lifestyle changes favourable to the environment.
In her speech, the state Commissioner for Education, Mrs Olayinka Olagujoye, encouraged the students to have the right attitude toward the environment to make it healthy and safe.
“We must develop behaviours that will minimise climate change effects in our society; let us come together in voice to make a change.
She encouraged schools to be active in the climate change programmes and allow students to participate.
As part of the activities to mark the event, the commissioner and other dignitaries signed the 2014 Climate Change Creed.
Three students were awarded prizes for emerging winners in the climate change quiz competition organised by the Ministry of Environment, while an artiste known as `9nice’ thrilled the students with his performance.(NAN
