Lagos – A commercial driver, Mufutat Azeez, who allegedly caused the death of a teenage student was on Tuesday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Azeez, 52, who resides at No. 29, Salami St., Mafoluku, Lagos, is being tried for reckless driving and manslaughter.
The prosecutor, Insp. Victor Eruada, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Jan. 20, 2016 at Ladipo Road, Mushin, Lagos.
He said that the accused drove the bus with registration number XZ 513 EKY dangerously on the road and allegedly crushed a teenager to death.
“The accused drove recklessly on a public highway and caused the death of a 12-year-old girl,’’ he said.
Eruada said that the accused lost control and rammed into a tricycle loaded with school children.
“He hit the tricycle loaded with the school children, which somersaulted.[pro_ad_display_adzone id=”70560″]
“The six students and the driver of the tricycle were rushed to the hospital but unfortunately, the victim gave up the ghost at the hospital,’’ he said.
Eruada said the offences contravened Section 29 of Road Traffic Act, Cap. 124, Law of Lagos State, 2003.
The accused pleaded not guilty of the offences.
The Magistrate, Mrs F.A. Azeez , granted the accused bail in the sum of N250, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She ordered that the case file be documented and transferred to office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice.
Azeez adjourned the case to March 7 for mention. (NAN)
