Lagos – Prof. Abdalla Adamu, the new Vice-Chancellor, National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), has pledged to embark on aggressive advocacy on the relevance and sustainability of the institution.
Adamu made the pledge in a statement signed by the Director, Media and Information of the institution, Dr Ronke Ogunmakin, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Lagos.
According to the statement, Adamu was speaking at the handing-over ceremony held at the institution’s headquarters in Lagos.
NAN reports that the vice-chancellor, took over from his predecessor, Prof. Vincent Tenebe.
Tenebe, alongside 12 others from recently established federal universities, were on Feb. 13, relieved of their appointments.
The statement said that Adamu promised to surpass the legacy of his predecessor.
“I want to reiterate my commitment to take education to the door step of every Nigerian, while ensuring the sustenance of the core values of accessibility, affordability and flexible learning, for which NOUN is reputed,’’ the statement quoted Adamu as saying.
It added that the former vice chancellor, Tenebe, enjoined the

officers to support the new helmsman in moving the institution to greater heights.
Tenebe described the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) being championed by NOUN as a child of necessity that must be collectively nurtured.
He said that this was necessary to bridge the admission gap created by the inability of conventional universities to provide education for all Nigerians.
NAN also reports that Adamu holds a double professorship in Science Education and Media and Cultural Communication from Bayero University Kano. (NAN)
