Lagos – Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State on Thursday pledged his administration’s commitment to improved security, infrastructure and intellectual development of students in public schools.

Ambode, who was represented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Idiat Adebule, said this at the grand finale of the Lagos State Schools’ Debate, Season Seven, organised by the State Ministry of Education.
He said investment in education was the best way to build a strong foundation for success and prosperity.
“The intellectual performance of our students in this debate is a proof that teachers in our public schools are doing well and are justifying the government’s huge investment in education.
“We will continue to show commitment to providing the best, not only in terms of quality education, but in terms of good and enabling environment for these students to learn and flourish properly,” he said.
Ambode urged the students to be focused and take education serious to compete globally and be equipped for the future.
In her remarks, Mrs Olabisi Ariyo, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, said the annual schools’ debate was to help develop and improve student’s intellectual capability.
Ariyo said that it would instil in them confidence to speak intelligently and increase the communication and research skills of students.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the debate is an annual competition for students in public senior secondary schools in the state.
The competition which started in 2009 is aimed at improving public speaking skills of students.
Miss Islamiat Ogunfowora, a student of Badagry Senior Grammar School, emerged winner of individual speaker’s debate category.
Also, Olayinka Ajayi and Ogunleye Ayomide of Lagos Progressive Senior Secondary School, Surulere, came third and second respectively.
In the school category, Badagry Senior Grammar School, Badagry, emerged winner, while Ogudu Senior Grammar School, Ogudu, and Lagos Progressive Senior Secondary School, Surulere, came second and third respectively. (NAN)
