Dutse, – The Fadama III Project in Jigawa has distributed protective kits for herbicide spray to 164 cluster farmers in the state, the state Project Officer, Alhaji Aminu Isa, has said.
Isa told newsmen on Wednesday in Dutse that the beneficiaries were earlier trained and given sprayers, adding that the kits were to protect them from harm while spraying chemicals on their farms.
“As you all know, most of these herbicides are poisonous and harmful to human consumption, hence the need for the farmers to protect themselves from that.
“So the items given to the farmers are pesticides spray suits, helmet, glasses, mask, rain boot, ear plug, hand gloves, among others.
“They are expected to use all the kits whenever they carry out such exercise in order to protect themselves from any harm from the herbicide,” the official said.
Isa disclosed that several women had been trained under the Fadama programme and provided with thrashing machines and first aid boxes for use in case of emergency.
“This is also in line with the World Bank policy that wherever a machine is provided, first aid kits must also be provided in case of injuries and other emergencies,’’ he added.
