ABUJA – The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday said it would engage the Federal Government on the need to review deployment of military personnel to maintain internal security.
The Director, Monitoring of NHRC, Mr Tony Ojukwu, said this was part of the recommendations of the panel on extra-judicial killings of seven members of Mbayion community of Gboko Local Government in Benue.
Ojukwu was the chairman of five-man investigative panel, which investigated the extra-judicial killings of some youths in Mbayion by soldiers on guard at the Dangote Cement Factory, Gboko in March. “They have approached the commission with a joint letter signed by 10 of them that they are satisfied with the compensation paid to them.
“They also wished that the commission should conclude the matter and that they are satisfied with the mediation process,” he said.
Ojukwu said that the Mbayion community had requested the commission to close the matter.
He said that the commission would soon issue a formal statement containing details of the compensation process and panel report. (NAN)
