OBA (Anambra) – Idemili North Football Team will on Sunday meet Nigerian Prisons Team in a battle for the coveted prize in the male football competition of the Anambra Sports Festival.
Idemili North beat Anaocha council by 2-1 to reach the final, while Nigerian Prisons defeated Dunukofia 4-2 in a match decided on penalties.
In the female category, Ihiala council team will play in the final, after beating Oyi girls by 3-1.
NAN reports that the team will meet Awka South, which also defeated Ekwusigo by 7-6 in another match decided on penalty shoot-out.
Meanwhile, in swimming, Rejoice Chinedu, representing Njikoka, won 11 gold and one silver in 12 events to emerge the highest individual medalist so far at the festival.
Chinedu said she was glad to have won the swimming competition but complained about the swimming pool, describing it as outdated.
She called on the Anambra Government to encourage the sport because of its medal potential.
NAN reports that the handball event in the festival is taking place at the popular Nkpor motor park.
The improvised venue was in a bid to ensure that all games featured at the festival in spite of the facility challenges facing sports in the state.
According to Maduka Okoye, coach of the state team, the Nkpor park venue is the best the state can boast of at the moment.
Okoye urged the state government to provide more facilities at the sporting complex in the state as well as improve the park as it was central to every part of the state.
