Kaduna – The National Teachers Institute (NTI) says it will train a total of 4,366 teachers across the country in 2018, as part of efforts to improve the quality of teaching and learning in public schools.
The Director General of the institute, Prof. Garba Azare made the disclosure in Kaduna at a meeting with stakeholders on the annual SDGs Retraining Workshop for Teachers.
Azare explained that a total of 3, 700 teachers, 100 from each of the 36 states and FCT, would be trained under the 2017 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) training programme of the Federal Government.
He added that the remaining 666 teachers, 18 from each state, would be trained under the federal government’s train-the-trainer initiative for teachers in public schools.
The D-G said that the capacity building training for primary school teachers would be on language communication, effective classroom management, basic teaching method and techniques and ICT.
“There will also be academic leadership training for head teachers and school principals, special educational needs and disabilities and HIV/AIDS initiative and digital literacy,’’ he said.
On the review meeting, Azare said it was to sensitise participants of the SDGs teacher training programme annually sponsored by the federal government.
According to him, the participants would discuss modalities of the training and other relevant issues to ensure the success of the exercise.
“We will continue to work with universities and other tertiary institutions and international agencies to design programmes that will address the current teaching needs of Nigeria,’’ he added.
Earlier, Dr. Ifayinwa Ukaigbu, Desk Officer, Education Sector, Federal Ministry of Education, noted that teachers training and retraining was crucial to achieving Goal 4 of the SDGs.
She noted that the pre-training meeting with relevant stakeholders will determine the success of 2017 SDGs training for Nigerian teachers. (NAN)
