LAGOS – An unemployed man, Jeff Alechenu, 33, who allegedly obtained N713,000 from one Chima Nwokoro under false pretence, on Thursday appeared before an Apapa Senior Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Alechenu, who resides at Kirikiri area of Lagos, is facing a two-count charge of stealing and obtaining under false pretence.
The prosecutor, Insp. Michael Unah, told the court that the accused fraudulently obtained N713,000 from Nwokoro, under the pretext of helping her to bail her nephew out of Kikiri Maximum Prison.
“When the complainant did not get any feedback from the accused as regards her nephew, she decided to ask for a refund.
“Alechenu refused to pay after persistent efforts made by Nwokoro,’’ Unah said.
The prosecutor said the accused committed the offences on Dec. 27, 2013 at Kirikiri Maximum Prison, Lagos.
He said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Section 312 stipulates 15 years imprisonment for obtaining by false pretences, while Section 285 prescribes three years for a person convicted of stealing.
Alechenu, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Senior Magistrate, Mrs A.O. Adegite, granted Alechenu bail in the sum of N250, 000, with two sureties in like sum.
She adjourned the case till April 28 for further hearing. (NAN)
