ASABA – Poultry farmers in Asaba and its environs in Delta on Friday complained of poor sales two days before the Easter celebration.
A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who visited and spoke with poultry farmers at the Abraka and Ogbeogonogo modern markets observed a lull in the patronage of turkeys, fowls and hens.
Some of the poultry farmers told NAN that sales were very poor this time compared to what it was during last Christmas and the New Year celebrations.
The farmers attributed the poor sales to the economic and political situation of the country, adding that in spite of the reduction in prices of the poultry goods, sales were still low.
A poultry farmer, Mrs Grace Onuemu, said: “The sales of chickens and turkeys have been very poor during this Easter celebration compared to other seasons like the Christmas.
“I brought 50 chickens and 30 turkeys to the market and I have not been able to sell up to 20 of them,’’ she lamented.
Mr Chidi Azu, also a poultry farmer, said: “The sales are very poor this year compared to last year’s.
“By this time last year, we were already enjoying some good sales, but this year, sales look very dull as patronage has not been encouraging a few days to the Easter celebration.’’
According to Mrs Philomena Okpara, who is also a poultry farmer, despite the low prices of chicken and turkey, customers have failed to show up.

She said that the price of each cock ranged between N3,500 and N4,000, depending on its size, while broilers go for between N2,000 and N2,5000 per one and each of the old layers sells for between N1,200 and N1,500.
“For turkey, the big size foreign turkey sells for between N17,000 and N20,000, while the local turkey sells for between N10,000 and N13,000,’’ she said. (NAN)
