Dr Dikko Suleiman, newly-appointed Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), officially assumed duties in Abuja on Monday.
Suleiman commended President Dr Goodluck Jonathan for finding him fit for the position “out of so many personalities in the country”.
“I am most humbly delighted to accept my appointment as the Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) by President Goodluck Jonathan.
He noted that UBEC was facing a great challenge on inadequate number of qualified teachers and how
to solve the situation where more than nine million school age children were out of school.
The UBEC boss therefore, urged members of the commission to continue accelerated intervention programmes by the commission to ensure the nation achieved the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) in basic education.
“In the spirit of Mr President’s Transformation Agenda, we will continue from where our predecessors stopped.
“I am conscious that the position which I have been called to fill is Herculean task.“
Suleiman pledged to perform his duty in line with the guiding principles, and also work diligently with a high degree of transparency, to implement UBEC’s mandate.
The UBEC boss said his appointment was not because others were not qualified for the position, but that it was the will
of God that he should serve for now in the position..
He, therefore, charged members of staff of UBEC to perform their duties dispassionately without allowing any interference
from any quarters, to move the commission forward.
“I know most of the problems of the organisations is the denial of the right of members of staff.
“During my tenure, welfare of members of staff will be given priority. Don’t be individualistic, let all of us work collectively and bring our ideas to move the commission ahead,“ Suleiman said.
Earlier, the former acting Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Rashid Aderinoye, said that the appointment of Suleiman came at the right time.
He thanked the workers for their cooperation during his short stay at the helm of affairs.
Aderinoye advised the staff to cooperate with the new boss to ensure his success in piloting the affairs of the commission effectively.
