Awka -The Anambra State Emergency Management Authority (ASEMA) has said that 10 local government areas in the state were at risk of flooding.
The Executive secretary of the body, Chief Paul Odenigbo, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Thursday that the residents should be better prepared for more emergencies.
Odenigbo bemoaned the level of destruction to property and infrastructure as a result of the flood arising from the rainfall of July 27.
He listed the flood-prone councils to include Anambra East, Anambra West, Oyi, Ogbaru, Anyamelum, Onitsha North and Onitsha South.
Others are Awka North, Idemili North, Idemili South, Ihiala and Ekwusigo.
He warned against dumping of refuse on drains and building on flood plains, adding that such wastes blocked waterways and redirected floods to homes and other unwanted places.
Odenigbo said the state needed assistances to handle the impending emergencies, adding that forecasts by meteorological services showed that there would be more torrential rainfall between August and October.

“There is great danger of flood in about 10 local governments and we are warning people resident in these areas to be cautious and ensure that the drains are free to reduce the risk of flooding.
“We are appealing to the general public to complement the government in providing relief materials to our brothers and sisters who will be affected.
“The 2012 flood is still fresh in our minds and we pray it never happens again,” he said.
