Abuja – Prof. Monday Joshua, the Executive Secretary, National Commission for Colleges of Education (NCCE), on Monday urged teachers to integrate Information Communications Technology (ICT) into the teaching system.
Joshua, who was represented by Dr Alex Maiyanga, the commission’s Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, made the call at a three-day Train-the-Trainers’ workshop in Abuja.
It was organised by the NCCE in collaboration with UNESCO’s International Institute for Capacity Building in Africa (IICBA).
The theme of the workshop is: “Support for the Implementation of Teachers Professional Development for Secondary Teachers in Science and Mathematics programmes.’’
Joshua said that integration of ICT into teaching methods, particularly in the area of Science and Mathematics, was to enable the country to move with the global trend of technological advancement.
He said that the workshop was aimed at building the capacity of Science and Mathematics teachers to enhance the implementation of the 2012 edition of minimum standards.
Joshua said that it was also meant for the integration of the reviewed Nigerian Educational and Research Development Council (NERDC)’s curriculum for secondary education in the implementation process.
“For Nigeria to meet the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and its vision of becoming one of the top economics in Africa and the world in general, it needs to exponentially grow its Science and Mathematics output.
“A high quality teacher education is of critical importance for the quality and relevance of education at all levels and to the high status of teaching profession itself.’’
He, however, urged on participants to avail themselves of the opportunity and be well equipped in the areas of instructional choices, effective methods of teaching students and integrating ICT into instruction effectively.

Dr Patience Awopega, the Programme Specialist of UNESCO/IICBA, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on the sidelines of the workshop that teachers were the driving force of any successful educational programme.
Awopega underscored the need to have quality teachers to implement existing policies.
