Oyo – Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State and Sen. Kabiru Gaya, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Works, on Monday commended Sen. Monsurat Sunmonu for facilitating the re-activation of the new Oyo-Ogbomoso road project.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that they made the commendation at the flag off ceremony of the 50-kilometre road project held at the boundary of Oyo and Ogbomoso on the expressway.
NAN reports that Sunmonu is a member of the All Progressives Congress(APC) representing Oyo Central Senatorial District.
Ajimobi said that Sunmonu had shown that she was a good representative of her constituency and the state in the National Assembly.
He said that the road project, which was first muted 36 years ago, had been abandoned by successive governments.
“Road network is an extremely important part of economic development.
“We commend Sunmonu and others who played special roles in making the reactivation of construction on this road a reality.
“We have never had a representative like Sunmonu in this constituency many years back,” he said.
Ajimobi, who also commended President Muhammadu Buhari urged the people to support the president in his efforts at transforming and repositioning the country.
Sen. Kabiru Gaya, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Works, said that the road project would be completed within the next three years.
Gaya said that building quality road network in the country was a cardinal objective of the Buhari administration.
He commended Sunmonu for her efforts at getting the road project captured in the budget, saying she was always mounting pressure on the assembly over it.
Gaya, a former governor of Kano State, said that the lawmaker was a good representative of her constituency, calling on the people to always support her.
In her remarks, Sunmonu recalled how she co-sponsored a motion on the floor of the Senate which directed investigation into the state of dilapidated and uncompleted roads in the country.
” In my contributions to the debate of the motion paper, the Oyo-Ogbomoso road was specifically mentioned.
“I visited the site during my constituency tour and town hall meeting on Sept. 19, 2015.
“I also made efforts to get relevant documents to pursue the executive on the happenings on the road,” she said.
Sunmonu said so much energy was devoted to liaising between the Senate Committee on Works, the Senate Committee on Appropriation, the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Works.
“I have contributed to the development of my constituency through empowerment and other various developmental initiatives.
“Despite the financial constraints Nigeria is facing, it is this joint effort that caused the Buhari-led government to budget N6billion to resume work on the road.
“By the special grace of God, this road will be completed soon,’’ she said.
NAN reports that members of Sunmonu’s constituency, who trooped to the venue of the flag off , described her as a responsive lawmaker.
NAN also reports that Sen. Ordia Clifford, Rep. Akeem Adeyemi, members of the State Executive Council and local government caretaker chairmen in Oyo State were in attendance at the occasion. (NAN)
