The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has reported that its Abuja headquarters, known as Labour House, was raided by armed security forces on Wednesday night.
Benson Upah, NLC’s Head of Media and Public Relations, released a statement describing the incident and calling for an international investigation.
The NLC stated that heavily armed security personnel, including officers from the Nigeria Police Force and plainclothes individuals believed to be from the Department of State Services (DSS), stormed the Labour House around 8:30 PM, after working hours.
The security operatives allegedly arrested the guard on duty and searched the building for materials related to the #EndBadGovernance protests.
The NLC condemned the raid as a serious violation of democratic principles, pointing out that even during military rule, such actions were not directed at the organization.
The statement criticized the lack of legal authority for the raid and raised concerns about its impact on democratic rights in Nigeria.
In response, the NLC advised its staff to stay away from the Labour House until it can be confirmed that no incriminating or dangerous materials were planted by the security forces.
The NLC is demanding the return of all confiscated items and the immediate removal of security personnel from its premises. The organization also warned that if such harassment continues, it might urge its members to stay home until their safety is assured.
