NEW YORK – UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Sunday met with Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission to discuss ways to enhance cooperation on peace and security in Africa.
At the meeting, they discussed the strategic partnership between the UN and the AU and ways to continue to enhance such cooperation in the area of peace and security.
They also reviewed challenges to peace and security in Africa, including the situation in Libya, Mali, the Sahel, Somalia, South Sudan and the Great Lakes Region.
The Secretary-General reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to a strengthen partnership with the AU and its Regional Economic Communities.
Ban also briefed the chairperson on the UN’s efforts to combat the spread of the Ebola disease.
In his meeting with Mr Sauli Niinistö, the President of the Republic of Finland, the Secretary-General commended Finland’s assistance with the disposal of Syrian chemical weapons through its support to the OPCW-UN Joint Mission.
The Secretary-General also expressed his appreciation for Finland’s commitment to the UN’s mediation efforts.
He thanked Niinistö for his personal engagement in the search for a solution to the crisis in Ukraine.
With regard to the Ebola crisis, the Secretary-General appealed to Niinistö to increase Finland’s support to international efforts to urgently tackle the scourge.
Ban also met with President Michelle Bachelet Jeria of the Republic of Chile.
He expressed gratitude for Chile’s contributions to the UN also as a troop contributor to UN peacekeeping operations and as a member of the Security Council.
They also discussed regional developments as well as issues relating to climate change and women’s empowerment. [eap_ad_1] Ban also met with Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al Sabah, the Prime Minister of the State of Kuwait.
The Secretary-General thanked Kuwait for its generous support to the UN and its humanitarian effort in Iraq.
He expressed gratitude to Kuwait for its hosting of the International Humanitarian Pledging Conferences for Syria and for the country’s generous contributions to the people of Syria.
He reassured Kuwait of the UN’s commitment to fulfilling the Security Council’s mandate on missing Kuwaiti persons and properties.
Ban and the Prime Minister also discussed the situation in Libya and Yemen as well as issues relating to climate change. (NAN)
