YENAGOA (Sundiata Post) – Former President Goodluck Jonathan and Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State have given reasons why Bayelsa State governor, Henry Seriake Dickson should be returned for a second term in office.
They both spoke at Dickson’s official declaration to seek the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket to contest the forthcoming governorship election on December 5.
Samson Siasia Sports Stadium, Yenagoa venue of the declaration was filled to capacity as a large crowd of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members and supporters came to witness the occasion.
But PDP acting national chairman, Uche Secondus was absent and only Mimiko and Nyesom Wike of Rivers State were the two governors present including four deputy governors out of the 12 governors expected to grace the occasion.
Jonathan stated that Dickson deserved a second term as he performed well in prompt payment of workers’ salaries, proper management of public resources without borrowing, improvement in the level of infrastructure and road construction.
He also said that voting for the incumbent governor was the only way the Ijaws could compensate the PDP for all the support the party gave to the Ijaws for the past 16 years.
Jonathan assured that he would also be present when Dickson would be formally handed the party flag to contest the governorship election after emerging victorious at the party’s primary election.
“But I want to tell him that I will also be here when he is presented with the flag of the party. One of the things worrying the Federal Government is the issues of workers’ salaries by states. Dickson has done well in that aspect. Also another issue is that of the borrowing. Dickson has done well. On infrastructure and development, Dickson has tried,” he stated.
Also speaking, Ondo State governor and chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, Olusegun Mimiko said the call for Dickson’s reelection was due to the noticeable development trend in the state.
“When you have a governor that has lifted his people, there is need for him to return. Some people are Abuja based giants and newspaper giant in terms of politics. Dickson is a man of accomplishment,” he stated.
Mimiko urged the South-South not to allow the All Progressives Congress (APC) to take over the region, saying the PDP Governors Forum noted that the APC was making dangerous incursions into PDP controlled states.

Governor Dickson said his second term bid was to rededicate himself to the stability and development of the state, saying the gathering was an indication that PDP is in charge of the state.
According to Dickson, his confidence is on the people of the state in spite of the federal might behind the APC and that after their primaries, he would appoint a caretaker committee for them and shut them down completely.
Buttressing his argument, Dickson stated: “Of all the political offices in the state, the opposition party has only one at the state assembly. Out of all the 105 councillors, they have none. From 1999 till date, we have four governors serving and three are still in PDP. Only one went astray. It shows that this is an unshakeable party. Bayelsa has no room for any other party. The other party has no message for us.”
