MAIDUGURI – The Borno State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Thursday donated relief materials worth millions of naira to victims of Boko Haram attacks in the state.
The state NLC Chairman, Mr Titus Abana, who presented theitems to Gov. Kashim Shettima at the Government House Maiduguri, said it was part of programmes to mark the 2014 May Day Celebration.
He said “this is aimed at bringing succour to the victims who lost their personal belongings to the crisis.
“We decided to shelve the annual celebration in the state because it we are mourning the numerous catastrophes caused by the Boko Haram insurgents in the state.
“Workers in Borno are in no mood for celebration as the uncertainty of our lives and the faith of our abducted girls still haunt us.
“We therefore resolved to dress in black to mourn the senseless killings which claimed so many lives and destroyed our communities, homes and schools,” Abana said.
Items donated include 50 bags of rice, 100 rubber mats, 100 litres of cooking oil, 50 bags of salt, 10 cartons of soap, 20 cartons of detergent and 20 cartons of seasoning, among others.
Receiving the items Gov. Shettima thanked the NLC for the gesture and urged residents to help pray for peace in the state.
The governor prayed for the peaceful return of the abducted students of Government Girls’ Secondary School (GGSS) Chibok. (NAN)
