ADO-EKITI – An Ado-Ekiti Customary Court on Wednesday dissolved an 18-year-old marriage between Omoniyi Odunayo and his wife Bosede for frequent fighting and threat to life.
The Presidentof the court, Mrs Akomolede Olayinka, in her judgment, held that the marriage had broken down irretrievably and consequently dissolved the marriage.
Akomolede awarded custody of the eldest child to the husband and the two younger ones to the wife, and ordered that the husband should be responsible for their education.
She also ordered that the husband should pay N5,000 as monthly upkeep allowance on each of the two children, while access to see the children was granted to both parents.
Odunayo, 45, told the court that his wife was a stubborn woman and did not take to corrections and advise.
He claimed that his wife once poured hot water on him because he married another wife, saying his wife did not possess the kind of character he could continue to cope with.
The father of three said that his wife also once threatened his life with a broken bottle which she used to attack him on his chest.
He, therefore, urged the court to award the custody of the eldest child to him, while the two youngest children should be with his wife.
Bosede, 42, admitted the allegations but explained that it was because of her husband’s indifferent attitude during the birth of her first child.
She also admitted that she poured hot water on him and broke a bottle on his husband’s chest.
According to her, it is just to scare him because he threatens to bring his second wife to the house.
She said that there was a particular day her husband sent some men to beat her up and strip her naked. (NAN
