ABUJA – A Grade 1 Upper Area Court at Karu in Abuja on Tuesday sentenced an applicant, Oriasotic Suke, to nine months in prison for breaking into a shop and stealing.
Suke, who is of no fixed address and was accused of stealing three bundles of electric cable valued at N27,000, was charged with three counts of criminal trespass, mischief and theft.
The presiding judge, Malam Hassan Ishaq, sentenced Suke after he pleaded guilty to theft.
However, Ishaq gave him an option of N15,000 fine, and warned the convict to stop stealing and engage in productive activities.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Israel Norgu, told the court that Mr Agbo Arinze of Apo in Abuja had lodged a report against Suke at the Apo Police Station on June 9.
Norgu said the accused broke into Arinze’s shop and stole three bundles of electric cable valued at N27,000, and also damaged some items in the shop in the process.
He told the court further that, during investigation, Suke claimed that he stole only one bundle and not three.
The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of sections 348, 327 and 287 of the Penal Code.
However, Suke pleaded guilty and begged with the court to be lenient with him.
“I have epilepsy. I stole only one wrap of the cable in order to sell and buy my drugs,’’ he told the court.(NAN)
