AKURE – A driver, Olusola Peters, on Thursday was arraigned before an Akure Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a Toyota Hilux vehicle valued at N1million and 46 cartons of beer.
Peters, 26, is facing charges of forgery and double count of stealing.
The prosecutor, ASP Pelumi Adejuwon, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 14, at about 8 a.m. at Oba-Ile road, Akure in Ondo State.
“He was employed as the driver of one Toyota Hilux vehicle with registration ONDO AL 698 WWW, valued at N1 million belonging to one Mrs Modupe Adetula, which he stole.
“Peters also stole 46 cartons of different brands of beer valued at N140, 000 belonging to the same person person which he was transporting.
“The accused further forged the documents of the Toyota Hilux to bear his name,” he said.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened sections 390 (6), and 390 (9) respectively, while forgery was contrary to section 465 and punishable under 467 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Adejuwon however applied for an adjournment to enable him assemble his two witnesses in court.
Not opposing the application for an adjournment, the counsel to the accused, Mr Leo Okoye asked for bail of his client in liberal terms and assured of credible sureties if granted.
The Magistrate, Mrs Olufunke Adegoroye, granted the accused bail in the sum of N150, 000 with two sureties in like sum.
She said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
Adegoroye adjourned the case to June 24 for hearing. (NAN)
