ABUJA – The Senate President, Sen. David Mark on Wednesday said Nigerians could rise to any challenge confronting the country as demonstrated in the case of Ebola Virus Decease (EVD).
Mark made this assertion while presiding over plenary in Abuja.
He said that the determination shown in containing Ebola was an indication that Nigerians could unite in fighting a common course irrespective of their differences.
The senate president commended the Federal Government and Lagos State Government for promptly deploying necessary measures to arrest the situation.
He also commended late Dr Ameyo Adadevoh and other health workers, who sacrificed their lives in ensuring that the virus was quickly contained. [eap_ad_2] “We can’t thank Dr Ameyo Adadevoh enough because she went out of her way to curtail the spread of the virus.
“The nation will do well to honour her and others, who sacrificed their lives to keep the rest of us alive,’’ he said.
He, however, said the presence of the virus in the country was a wakeup call for all Nigerians to take the issue of environmental sanitation and personal hygiene more seriously.
He further called on communities to intensify efforts in creating awareness and putting other measures in place to ensure that their community members were more cautious.
He said in view of the improvement made in containing the spread of the virus, individuals and groups should exercise caution in listing Nigeria as one of the most hit countries.
He said although the battle against Ebola was not over yet, “we should give ourselves the kudos for doing well rather than being painted black.’’
Speaking on the controversy surrounding school resumption date over Ebola, the senate president urged school authorities to put preventive measures in place before resumption.
“Schools should be allowed to resume but measures should be put in place before resumption because it is not over yet,“ he said.
Ebola was first recorded in Nigeria on July 20 through a 40 year old Liberian-born American, Patrick Sawyer.
Sawyer was on his way to attend the 8th ECOWAS Retreat of Heads of Offices meeting in Calabar. (NAN)[eap_ad_3]
