The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) yesterday commenced the screening of candidates sitting for its ongoing Nov\ December 2014 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for the Ebola Virus Disease.
The screening of the over 250,000 candidates for the exam according to the council is part of measures to contain the Ebola virus which has killed in less than two months seven people in the country including America-Liberian Patrick Sawyer through whom the disease crept into the country, according to report from National Mirror [eap_ad_1] The Head of Nigeria’s National Office (HNO) of WAEC, Mr. Charles Eguridu and some other management staff of the council yesterday went round some exam centres in Lagos State where candidates were writing Economic papers 1 and 2 to monitor the screening exercise.
The centres visited include those at Rasome Kuti Memorial Secondary School, Surulere; Birrel Avenue High School and Hebert Macaulay Senior Girls High School, both in Yaba; Ojoku Senior High School, Tolu Complex and Tolu Expressway Junior Secondary School, as well as Adeolu Senior Secondary School, Tolu, all in Ajegunle.
While none of the candidates at those centres yesterday was Ebola virus threat, the council boss disclosed that similar exercise was going on simultaneously across states with record of Ebola cases, as well as in Abuja and Kaduna.
Eguridu told newsmen shortly after the exercise that if any candidate should be found sick or be a threat to the health of others, such doctors and nurses on ground with medications and an ambulance were ready to handle such cases.
The acting Head of Medical Services of the council, Dr. Adedeji, on his part, said over 70 scanners were distributed to various centres in Lagos alone.
