ABUJA (SUNDIATA POST)- A group of All Progressives Congress (APC) members has eulogised President Bola Tinubu for appointing the former APC National Vice Chairman, South-South, Hilliard Eta, as the Chairman, Governing Board of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
The group described Eta’s appointment as a round peg in a round hole.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Eta’s appointment was part of those announced last week by the Presidency.
Speaking on behalf of the group at a reception in Abuja, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, former Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Prosecution, said the party members were happy and excited over the appointment.
Obono-Obla said, “We gather here in Abuja to celebrate him (Eta) at a reception for his appointment as the Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).”
The former Chairman, Special Presidential Investigation Panel for the Recovery of Public Property, said the party members eulogised the President for recognising the role played by Eta in the last election and considered him worthy of appointment in such strategic position.
He urged Eta to ensure that he brings his knowledge of administration to impact positively in the NYSC.
He added that the Act establishing the Corps should be reviewed to bring the Corps to the present reality and challenges in the country.
According to him, the current structure of the NYSC, established over five decades ago, has served its purpose of fostering unity and national integration.
“However, the scheme needs to evolve to address pressing contemporary issues such as insecurity, youth unemployment, and the need for increased national resilience.
“At a time when the nation faces serious security challenges, the NYSC can play a pivotal role in combating insurgency and fostering discipline among Nigerian youths,” Obono-Obla said.
He emphasised that the reform would not only prepare youths for active involvement in national security but also instill a sense of patriotism, discipline, and civic responsibility.
He added that such a shift could significantly reduce youth restiveness, channeling their energy towards productive endeavors that contribute to national development.
NAN recalls that Eta was the former APC National Vice Chairman, South-South during the time of Sen. Adams Oshiomhole as APC National Chairman.
He later acted as APC National Chairman when Oshiomhole was removed and the APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Sen. Abiola Ajimobi was indisposed. (NAN)
