Former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lt. General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, has passed away at the age of 80 after a prolonged illness. He died on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, confirmed the news through a statement issued by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.
Governor Mutfwang described Useni’s death as a significant loss to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the nation as a whole. He praised the late General’s exemplary leadership, dedication to service, and efforts to promote peace and security, particularly in Northern Nigeria and Plateau State.
Useni, a distinguished military officer, held key roles in Nigeria’s governance, including Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT. After retiring from the military, he transitioned into politics, serving as Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and as a Senator for Plateau South under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.
Governor Mutfwang highlighted Useni’s legacy of selfless service, compassion, and generosity, which profoundly impacted the lives of many.
He concluded, “On behalf of my family, the government, and the peace-loving people of Plateau State, I extend my deepest sympathies to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the immediate family, and all those mourning the loss of this distinguished elder statesman.”
