Yenagoa – The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), has advised commercial drivers to obey the order on the use of Speed Limiting Device, to improve safety on the roads.
Mrs Ojeme Ewhrudjakpor, Deputy Corp Marshal, FRCS, gave the advice on Thursday in Yenagoa during a sensitisation programme on speed limiting device organised by the Bayelsa sector command.
She said that the enforcement of the order would commence nationwide on October 1.
She said that the use of the device would reduce road crashes from excessive speeding and improve safety on the nation’s roads.
“For now, the FRSC is concerned about commercial vehicles because of the importance of their driving to humanity; but with time, the enforcement will extend to private vehicles.
`We all know that speed is the major cause of crashes in Nigeria with commercial vehicles accounting for the highest per cent of the crashes.
“The FRSC is ready to enforce the use of the device by Oct. 1.
“I urge all commercial drivers to install such device in their vehicles and support the campaign to reduce death resulting from crashes,” Ewhrudjakpor said.
In his remarks, Mr Gora Wobin, sector commander, FRSC in Bayelsa, described speed limiting device as `necessary’ for every vehicle and urged commercial drivers to install the device in their vehicles bfore Oct. 1.
“Install one speed limiter today and stay alive; the device is very important because when speed is reduced fuel consumption will also be reduced,” he said.
Also speaking, Mr ThankGod Eribo, Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) said the introduction of speed limiting device was a welcome development.
He however appealed to federal government to extend the enforcement date. (NAN)
