Mexico – Haiti has annulled a disputed presidential election and will hold a new election later this year, the country’s election authority said on Tuesday.
The first round of voting will be held on Oct. 9 if no candidate prevails in the first ballot, a run-off election will be held in January 2017.
The move is an attempt to right irregularities in the presidential election held in October 2015 that have spun the country into political crisis.
In that election, government candidate Jovenel Moise received the most votes, but the opposition did not recognise his victory.
The date for a planned run-off between Moise and the opposition Jude Celestin had to be moved several times.
Haiti’s former Head of State, Michel Martelly resigned in February without an elected successor.
Ever since his resignation, an interim president has headed the impoverished Caribbean island nation. (dpa/NAN)
