The Anambra Truth, Justice, and Peace Commission (ATJPC) report revealed that ongoing restiveness and violence in Anambra and the entire South-East are impacting the demographic sustainability of the Igbo community, particularly affecting women’s chances of finding suitable spouses.
Released in Awka, the report highlighted the structural problem caused by the loss of potential mates due to killings and unrest since 1999. It emphasized the hardships faced by women, including the fear of birthing children outside of marriage and the economic consequences of widowhood.
The commission expressed concerns that security challenges would lead to an increasing number of unmarried women in the region, hampering progress towards Sustainable Development Goals.
