LAGOS – The Technical Director, Lagos State Cricket Association, Goke Idris, on Monday said 20 teams were jostling for honours in the cricket event of the Lagos State Sports Festival, “Ibile Games”.
Idris told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the event in which 12 male and eight female teams were featuring would be based on the T-20 format and strictly on knock-out basis.
The Games, which started on April 30 and will end on May 10 but the cricket event would last from May 5 to May 7.
“We have 20 schools participating in cricket event, while the male teams are playing at the Tafawa Balewa Square the ladies are playing at Jubril Martins Grammar School, Iponri.
“And it will be based on knock-out because the days allotted to the event will not be adequate,” he said.
The technical director expressed satisfaction that schools were beginning to embrace the sport in the country because it would help in developing it from the grassroots.
“One good thing about competitions like this is that it sometimes serves as platform for young lads to express their skills and be discovered.
“I am aware that no fewer than three from the last edition of the Games have since joined clubs participating in the cricket league in Lagos.
“And they were young when they were discovered,” Idris said. (NAN)
