OWERRI – The Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Chief Benjamin Uwajumogu, has called for the unconditional release of suspects accused of vandalising buildings at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).
Uwajumogu made the call on Thursday following a motion for adjournment moved by Mr Innocent Ekeh (APC-Owerri West) during which he protested against the arrests.
He urged the commissioner of police in the state and the authorities of the university to do everything possible to restore normalcy to the area.
The speaker also appointed a five-man committee headed by Mr Victor Ndunagu to meet with the university authorities and the leaders of the affected communities on ways to quell the tension in the area.
Other members of the committee are Mrs Pat Ekeji (PDP-Aboh Mbaise), Emeka Offor (APC-Ngor-Okpala), Innocent Ekeh (APC-Owerri West), and Mike Ndunagu (APC-Orlu).
Some uncompleted staff quarters in the university were vandalised on Wednesday by protesters suspected to be from the host communities of Ihiagwa, Umuchima and Obinze. (NAN)
