Mudashiru Obasa, the impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, has questioned the legitimacy of his removal, calling on lawmakers to follow due constitutional processes.
Speaking publicly for the first time since his impeachment, Obasa addressed supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge in GRA Ikeja, Lagos, on Saturday. He described the corruption allegations against him, including claims of financial mismanagement, as “impossible.”
Obasa was removed from office by 32 of the 40 lawmakers in the Assembly, following accusations that included the controversial ₦17 billion gate project. However, he maintained his composure, stating, “I am not disturbed; I am not afraid of the developments that happened at the Assembly,” while reaffirming his determination to clear his name.
He dismissed the corruption claims as baseless and urged those accusing him of financial impropriety to provide evidence. “If I am not Speaker, that’s not the end of the world. If you want to claim that I am corrupt, please prove it,” he said.
Mocking one of the allegations, Obasa questioned the validity of the reported ₦16 billion cost of a gate construction project, sarcastically comparing it to “the wall of Jericho.”
The allegations and Obasa’s impeachment have sparked intense debates, with many scrutinizing his leadership tenure and the financial activities of the Assembly under his watch. Despite his removal, Obasa remains confident, asserting his commitment to defending his reputation.
