Rome – Large-scale marijuana plantations run by the ‘Ndrangheta Mafia have been uncovered in the southern Italian region of Calabria, Carabinieri police said Wednesday.
In an operation called “Green Day,” police seized 5,000 marijuana plants, 200 kilogrammes of drugs, thousands of “top quality” marijuana seeds, and arrested four people, a statement said.
The suspects are linked to the Ursino ‘Ndrangheta crime family, which operates in the Gioiosa Jonica area, in eastern Calabria, the statement added.
Calabria forms the tip of Italy’s boot.
The ‘Ndrangheta originates from there but has grown into one of the world’s top organised crime groups.
