The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) has officially set July 12 as the date for the state’s council elections.
This was announced on Friday in a statement from LASIEC’s Head of Public Affairs, Tope Ojo, in Lagos.
According to Naija News, Ojo said the election will cover 57 council chairmanship seats and 376 councillor positions across Lagos State. If a re-run becomes necessary, it will be held on July 19.
Preparations are already underway, starting with the release of the Notice of Election, which marks the official beginning of the electoral process. The election will take place in all 20 Local Government Areas, 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs), and 376 wards in the state.
Ojo also stated that political parties must visit the LASIEC headquarters to collect nomination forms for their candidates. A crucial meeting with all registered political parties has been scheduled for Tuesday.
“The Election Guidelines will be published on April 17,” Ojo added, explaining the upcoming steps in the process.
Campaigning is set to begin on April 18 and will continue until July 9, allowing candidates plenty of time to reach out to voters. Additionally, parties must submit nomination forms for “substituted” and “only candidate” entries between June 18 and June 25.
LASIEC Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (rtd), reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting a fair, free, and credible election. He also assured that all political parties will be treated equally throughout the process.
He called on all parties and aspirants to stick to the election timetable, stressing that maintaining the integrity of the process depends on everyone’s compliance.
