Yenagoa – The member representing Kolokuma-Opokuma constituency 2 in the Bayelsa House of Assembly, Mr Wisdom Fafi, on Friday presented sets of protective kits and palliatives to journalists.
Fafi presented packets of face masks, sanitisers, soap and other personal protection equipment to journalists in Yenagoa.
He said at the event, held at the NUJ Bayelsa State Council Secretariat in Yenagoa, that the gesture was part of efforts to contain the spread of the Coronavirus.
The lawmaker said the donation of the protective kits and palliatives was to identify with journalists, given their critical role in the society.
He said that as essential duty workers, it was important for journalists to be well protected in the quest to effectively cover the Covid-19 pandemic.
In his response, the NUJ National Trustee, Zone F, Mr John Angese, said that despite the risks journalists, as essential workers, were exposed to, they were often excluded from the scheme of things.
He called on the Federal and State Governments as well as the private sector to consider media professionals as the most vulnerable in the course of safeguarding the lives of Nigerians.
The state Chairman of the NUJ, Mr Samuel Numenengi, in his remark, thanked the legislator for the gesture, urging other well-meaning Nigerians to follow suit.
Numenengi called for collective efforts from all Nigerians to successfully tackle the deadly Coronavirus disease.
