ABEOKUTA – The police on Monday arraigned a 20-year-old man, Kazeem Adeyinka, in an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court for allegedly assaulting his fiancee, Taiwo Soetan.
Adeyinka, of no fixed address, is a standing trial on a two-count charge of assault and theft.
The prosecutor, Insp. Augustine Ozimini, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Jan. 27 at about 8 p.m. at Mosalasi Jimoh Street, Abeokuta,
Ozimini alleged that the accused used a bottle to assault the complainant in her parent’s house and stole her Itel phone valued at N3,000.
He said Taiwo had a baby for the accused but the child died due to improper care by the father.
“Taiwo said she left her mother-in-law’s house, whom she was living with, for her parent’s house following Adeyinka’s failure to visit her parents and formally ask for her hand in marriage.”
The prosecutor further said that after Taiwo refused to follow Adeyinka to his house he got annoyed and assaulted her and the mother.
Ozimini said the offence contravened sections 355 and 390 of the Criminal Law of Ogun State, 2006.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the counts.
The magistrate, Mr Emmanuel Adekunle, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He said the sureties must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction as well as tender evidence of tax payment.
He adjourned the case until May 30. (NAN)
