Jos – A Jos Magistrates’ court on Monday sentenced a 23-year-old man, Sule Ali to two months imprisonment for attempting to steal a cell phone during a church service. Ali of Dandinkowa Area of Jos, was convicted for criminal trespass and attempted theft under Sections 348 and 95 of the penal code. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports the Magistrate, Mr Tijani Zololo, passed the judgment after the convict pleaded guilty and begged for leniency.

The convict, in his plea attributed his behaviour to “influence of alcohol’’ “ I do not know what came over me, I am very sorry,’’ he said. Zololo said the judgment would serve as deterrent to others. Earlier, the Prosecutor, Cpl. Kabiru Bashimu, said the convict criminally trespassed into a Living Faith Church and attempted to steal the cell phone while church service was going on. He said the convict was caught in the act by one Dohi Alexander, a member of the church. Bashimu told the court that during investigation the convict confessed to committing the crime. (NAN)
