ABUJA – The Minister of Youth Development, Mr Boni Haruna, on Thursday urged Nigerian youths not to be used as agents of mayhem in the country.
Haruna said this when the National Commandant of Peace Corps, Mr Dickson Akoh, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.
He said the ministry would continue to support youth voluntary organisations in the country, adding that some organisations abused the confidence of the public. “ It is important that we leverage on programmes of organization that would promote peace and build the confidence of the public,’’ the minister said.
He advised the organisation to focus on the positive rather than negative and contribute its own quota to the development of the country.
Mr Dickson Akoh, had earlier said Boko Haram insurgency ravaging parts of the country had taken a toll on the socio economic aspects of the nation.
“The prolonged years of military rule, civil war and the proliferation of light and small arms have made the youths susceptible to the culture of violence, thuggery and banditry.
“In trying to find a lasting solution to these problems, there is the need for the ministry to support a summit for voluntary uniformed youth organisations,”
He said such a summit would equip the youth with the basic knowledge to enable them gather primary intelligence data in their communities.
“This data gathered can be transmitted to relevant security agencies for prompt and necessary action,’’ Akoh said. (NAN)
