Abuja (Sundiata Post) -The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) has expressed displeasure over the pilfering of its content by the online Media Publishers.

The agency through its Head of Lagos Operations, Kate Popoola disclosed this in a meeting with the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) in Logos on Monday.

Popoola who called on online operator to rather subscribe, informed that the agency is offering special rate that will not be detrimental to the agency’s operation.

According to Popoola, “This is a good beginning and we appreciate the environment in which you are carrying out your business and NAN cannot be removed from that same environment.

In his remarks, President of GOCOP, Dotun Oladipo, said the Guild will, as a group, offer the agency a platform not only to stem the illegal usage of its media content, but would also contribute to enhance NAN’s finances.

Oladipo who promised that GOCOP will ensure that people do not continue to infringe on the copyrights of NAN as a foremost media service provider in the country, pleaded with NAN to ensure that the services would be at an affordable cost because of the economic situation in the country.

He admitted that a lot of people obtain materials from NAN without appropriate authorization, but added that it is because they cannot afford to pay for such services.

Oladipo therefore called on the agency to ensure that the services would be at an affordable cost.

The GOCOP President said, “We are hoping that with the information that will be in the public space after this meeting, our members and others will get to familiarise themselves with the legal means of getting such materials.”

GOCOP as a body of journalists who rose to the top of the profession in the print media, was formed five years ago.
